| Description |
The Mercedes 540K (type W29) is a grand touring car built by Mercedes-Benz between 1936 and 1940, a development of the 500 K, also one of the greatest performance automobiles of the Thirties. Available as a two-seater cabriolet, four seater coupé or seven seater limousine (with armoured sides and armoured glass), it was one of the largest cars of its time. The straight 8 cylinder engine of the 500K was enlarged to 5401 cu in developing 115hp. There was an attached Roots supercharger, which could either be engaged manually for short periods, or automatically when the accelerator was pushed fully to the floor. This increased power to 180 hp This is one of two Kombinationswagens built. It featured a steel roof that could be removed and a soft hood could be substituted in its place thus converting the car from a coupe into a cabriolet.
