The Czech company Tatra stated building automobiles in 1897, the Tatra name first used on the car range in 1919 Tatra's specialty was luxury cars of a technically advanced nature, going from air-cooled flat-twins to fours and sixes. Tatra began building advanced, streamlined cars in 1934 with the large Tatra 77, the world's first production aerodynamic car. The next model, the Type 87 was produced from 1936-50, powered by a rear-mounted 2900cc air-cooled 90-degree overhead cam V8 engine that produced 85 horsepower and could drive the car at nearly 100 mph, one of the fastest cars of the time. Its streamlined shape was based on the Tatra 77. A fin in the sloping rear of the Tatra helps to divide the air pressure on both sides of the car, a technique used in later aircraft. Small sets of windows in the dividers between the passenger, luggage space and engine compartments, plus louvres providing air for the air-cooled engine, allowed limited rear visibility. Its entire rear segment could be opened, to service the engine. The front doors are 'suicide doors', whereas the rear doors open in an orthodox manner.
