Monsoon Maroon. Edsel Ford introduced the 'Mercury' in 1939 as a model to fill the gap between the basic Ford V8, and the luxury Lincoln Zephyr. New styling was introduced in 1941, the 'Mercury Eight' name plate was introduced, four inches longer made it a bigger car inside. To lower production costs, the Mercury Eight shared much of its body with the Ford V8. 1941; Bullet shaped parkers. 1942; Rectangular parkers. Building of cars was put on hold over the war years; 1943-45. Lincoln and Mercury were combined into a single Lincoln-Mercury division; while functioning as one division, the two brands kept their separate model lines. They continued building Mercurys in 1946, now with a new grille. 1946; Painted grille surround. 1947; Chrome grille surround, and 'Mercury' on the side of the hood. 1948 Mercury Eights were identical to 1947. Models for 1948 were; the 72 2 door Coupe, the 74 4 door Sedan, the 76 2 door Convertible and the 79 4 door Wagon. Engine; 100hp 239 cu in Flathead V8 |
