Summary edit

Description

Hong Kong Museum of History.

Postwar Hong Kong had a severe overcrowding problem, as those who were forcibly resettled by the Japanese started to return. Even more people crowded in when the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949 and the Communists took over China. Many people lived in shantytowns, but after a vicious 1953 fire left a large number of residents homeless overnight, authorities scrambled for solutions. Soon, apartment blocks went up.

Living conditions were very spartan. An apartment of barely 11 square meters had to house a full family of seven or eight people, with meals having to be cooked on balconies. Laundry and toilets were communal, schools were thrown up on rooftops as afterthoughts, and hospitals and other services were nonexistent. But the low rent, at only HKD $14 per month, was unbeatable, and having a real roof over one's head was priceless.
