The S Series Valiant was built in Australia from March 1962 to May 1963. A facelift on the 1st Australian assembled Valiant, the R Series, which was only available for 3 months. Only available as a 4 door sedan, it was introduced to take on the EK Holden and the XK Falcon, the Valiant was more advanced in many ways, faster and more reliable. As soon as the new model S Series was released in America, it was brought to Australia, it was an evolution of the previous model, featuring a revised grille, now with fine horizontal bars, the boot lid no longer included a non-functional spare wheel moulding and round tail-lights replaced the previous oblong units. Mechanical changes included larger brakes and increased fuel tank capacity, a steering column mounted gearshift replaced the floor mounted shifter
