1963 Volkswagen Beetle with Sunroof


Original description from Flickr:

“ My 1963 Volkswagen, just back from Europe. It is at the home of George Hurchalla, my Haverford College roommate, in Livonia, near Ann Arbor, Michigan. The main "extra" feature of this car is a sun roof.

This was my second Volkswagen. I spent the summer traveling in Europe, and bought the VW to pick up at the factory in Wolfsburg, Germany. After driving it in Europe for about two months, I took it to a shipper in Hamburg, who put it on a ship that delivered new Volkswagens to dealers in the U.S. It was shipped to Toledo, Ohio. I was working temporarily in Fort Wayne, Indiana at the time.

I had picked the car up at the Port of Toledo a few days before, and had not yet gotten an Indiana license plate. It still has the Zollkennzeichen, a special German license plate for cars that tourists bought to ship home after driving in Europe for a time.

I drove this car from 1963 to 1973, when I replaced it with my third Volkswagen, a 1973 model.
