Description19 All Out for Our Babies March - Oakland, California, Fruitvale.jpg |
English: Peaceful and intense rally and march for Trayvon Martin and for all Black and Brown Babies. Families met and departed from Oscar Grand Plaza (14th and Broadway) to Fruitvale Bart Station.
Police were walking in the group and video recording everyone. Later I noticed that they were doing the same from at least two Police cars. The Police followed the protesters on foot, motorcycles, cars, vans, and at least one helicopter. There were two helicopters, but one seemed to be from a TV News. After a few miles of walking the protesters were about a block away from their destination, Fruitvale Bart Station, when the march stopped because the Police blocked their way. It was a very intense moment, but courage came out after someone yelled something along the line of We walked about 36 blocks! And we don't want to go back! We want to go forward!! and it was after this voice all decided to walk through the line of standing Police. I was very afraid that many will be arrested, including myself. The speed of the walk, the body languages, and voices were indicators to me of a mix of fear and bravery; expecting Police to attack and arrest us at any moment. I was afraid. Afraid even more than normal because I myself got arrested when photographing a protest a few days before. And this is the fact that I didn't take as many pictures as I normally do. I was afraid of the Police. The way they treat people when arrested is scary. Made me believe that there were not humans, and that I was not living in a free country anymore. The march ended at the train station, but after a small rally and beautiful ceremony that brought up a feeling of some peace and hope that someday non-white and poor people will be treated with respect and compassion.
