As I start a series of three 19th century colorizations, I will explain some curious facts about this period. Here we go. Voting in the 19th century was a privilege and far not a right. To be able to vote, in some places of Great Britain you had to own a large cooking pot. The people who accomplished this were known as potwallopers. In theory, the pot was to be taken as proof that they had a hearth big enough to contain it, or what is the same, that they could wallop a pot. This was intended to mean that they were first-class citizens. Potwallopers existed in the Unreformed House of Commons prior to the Reform Act 1832, and in its predecessors the Irish House of Commons and House of Commons of Great Britain (until 1800) and the House of Commons of England (to 1707). #colorized #colored #19thcentury #people #civil #postwalloper #greatbritain #houseofcommons #reformact1832 #sillylaws |
