An early Hinayana Buddhist site that likely later evolved into Mahayana site

Summary edit

Description
English: The Korukonda Buddhist site is on the top of a Eastern Ghats hill, east of Korukonda village, north of Kapavaram village and to the east of Godavari river. It is about 25 kilometers north of Rajamahendravaram city (formerly Rajahmundry), Andhra Pradesh. The Kapavaram village with which it is associated is not to be confused with another village with the same name that is west of Godavari river.
  • Korukonda literally means "carved hill". It contains these Buddhist site, as well separate set of caves associated with the Hindu tradition. The Buddhist site here is one of several found near the Godavari river, while sites on the hills and valleys of Krishna river hosted competing schools of Buddhism.
  • The excavations at this site has uncovered many chaityagrihas, stupa foundations and a refractory. Seven cells are interconnected with a shared corridor. Nearby, the rock has been cut to make a vihara for the monastery. The site overlooks the scenic valley and Andhra terrain below.
  • Based on the structures discovered here that are similar in style to those found near Bheemunipatnam (far northeast Andhra Pradesh), the Pandavula Metta site was likely an early Hinayana sub-school (~ 1st century BCE) that evolved into a Mahayana sub-school of Buddhism in the first half of the 1st millennium.
