Description

MD 115 toward Lisa Drive, Redland, MD, USA.

Complaints were received about higher-speed traffic using the center two-way left-turn lane to bypass queues, posing a safety risk to motorists exiting or entering side-streets & using the center lane for its intended purpose. Observations confirmed that there was a significant rate of queue jumpers. Yellow flexposts were installed in the center turn lane at a point nearest to the signal which was causing the queues, albeit without adversely impacting left-turn storage or the many driveways located along the length of this segment of roadway. Observations one day after installation found some drivers still attempting to jump queue, but merging back into queue as soon as the flexposts were noticed. Observations one week after installation found a 100% success rate, with not a single vehicle inappropriately jumping queue. As of April 2008 (approx. 1.5 years after implementation), only one post has been knocked down -- located at one of the corners of the triangular shape.
