A fierce south-easterly wind was hampering firefighter efforts to bring a fire on Devil's Peak under control late on Tuesday night. The fire broke out when vegetation below Rhodes Memorial caught alight at around 8:30pm. By midnight the whole of Devil's Peak was ablaze; by 2am the flames had spread around the side of the peak and were threatening the suburbs of Walmer Estate and Vredehoek where residents were being evacuated and roads were closed to traffic.
