Manufacturer's certification label for the domestic Equus, visiting the US on road test and floor sample duty. As this is a preproduction example, GVWR, GAWR, and tire pressure information are not indicated.

The Korean domestic market certification label only states the year of manufacture. By contrast, for the US, regulations require month and year, and Hyundai goes a step further and indicates actual date as well for its US-market vehicles.

The VIN breaks down as follows: Digits 1-3 (KMH) indicate a Hyundai passenger car built in South Korea, digits 4-5 (GK) indicate a high-end trim (K) of the Genesis platform (G), digit 10 (A) indicates model year 2010, and digit 11 (U) indicates the main Ulsan assembly plant.

After introducing the Genesis in the US in mid-2008, Hyundai stepped up its luxury car game. The Equus luxury flagship, formerly a badge-engineered front-wheel-drive Mitsubishi, was completely redesigned as a larger version of the rear-wheel-drive Genesis. Shortly after it entered production and South Korean domestic sales in early 2009, Hyundai shipped 100 pre-production examples to the US, for road testing and consumer reaction prior to possible US sales. The response was good - and Hyundai would go ahead and release the Equus for the US market in December 2010.
