Description Over the course of about a week in January 1610, Galileo made six observations of the major satellites of Jupiter. With the planet simulator program Celestia, it is possible to compare the actual positions of the moons at that time to Galileo's drawings, as presented in Sidereus Nuncius[1]. Note: Galileo's drawing of the jovian system on January 7 does not match Celestia's depiction for that evening; however, the drawing does match Celestia's depiction for the previous evening, January 6. Considering other minor errors to be found in Sidereus Nuncius (such as giving the distance to the moon as "sixty earth diameters" instead of "sixty earth radii"), it is probable Galileo simply confused the date. Nevertheless, the Galilean moons' discovery date should be given as January 8, rather than January 7 or January 6, since that was the date he first suspected that he was observing moving bodies other than fixed stars.
