| Description | Calamagrostis nutkaensis—Pacific reedgrass. Named for Nootka Sound, the place responsible for all of Jack Aubrey's glory and, ultimately, blue at the mizzen. Ranges north from the Central Coast of California, never far from the sea, to Alaska. The plant is a desirable accent plant for gardens in coastal California. Use reedgrass instead of the terribly invasive fountain grass in California gardens. This photo shows spikelets and spent flowers. Several aphids can be seen when the photo is enlarged. The plant photographed is at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA. |
