English: A Beaver moon in the evening sky above the city of Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal. The 'Beaver moon' is so called by Native American tribes who named the cycles of the moon by features they associated with the Northern Hemisphere seasons. In this case it is named because it was often last full moon before lakes and streams in the north inevitably freeze over and so allowing the Beaver the opportunity to dam rivers to make there winter homes before it would become impossible. |
