The figurehead had to be substantially restored with fibreglass in the Museum's Conservation Laboratory.

THE SHIP
"Samual Plimsoll" was one of the first of the iron clippers. It was built for the Aberdeen and White Star Line and launched in 1873.

She was used on the London-Australia run until 1904. On her first voyage (73 days to Sydney) she carried 188 immigrants. A fast ship, she is claimed to have had one run of 348 miles in 24 hours. In 1904 she was converted to a coal hulk in Sydney and later towed to Fremantle. She worked as a coal hulk until 1945 when sunk in a collision.

THE MAN

Samuel Plimsoll (1824-98), the "Sailor's Friend", a Bristol M.P. who forced through legislation in the British Parliament in 1876 which instituted a maximum load-line on all vessels. The Plimsoll Line is considered to be one of the most important advances in ensuring the safety of ships and seamen.
