editDescription2019 Great Stone Church, Mission San Juan Capistrano 2.jpg |
English: The ruins of the Great Stone Church in Mission San Juan Capistrano in San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, California are of a sandstone church begun in 1797 and completed in 1806. The stone used was quarried from gullies and creek beds up to 6 miles (9.7 km) away, and were held together by mortar made from crushed limestone. A 7.5 magnitude earthquake in 1812 destroyed the church. An attempt to rebuild it in 1815 failed. In this image, the bell wall (campanario), which dates from c.1813, can be seen on the left. |
