| Description | Taken during a photo-stop on the Irish Traction Group's railtour "The Bell Viewer" on 23 October 1993. This allowed passengers to visit the collection of preserved locos owned by the same group which are based in the old goods shed. Seen here is C Class no. 231 and like the A Class, these were built by Metropolitan Vickers in the late 1950s. Re-engined with General Motors engines to replace the unreliable engines made by Crossley. As they were re-engined, they were re-classified as B Class. They were used for both freight and passenger traffic. During their last few years they were adapted for push-pull working with de-engined railcar stock for Dublin suburban services. CIE withdrew them during the 1980s following the electrification of the Dublin suburban service (DART). However 6 examples were sold to Northern Ireland Railways mainly used on permanent way trains. They were not to last long. Altogether three examples have survived in preservation. |
