| Description | 330-CFD-DN-SD-07-12627: U.S. Navy LT. Joseph D. Reardon (left), Deputy Director of Operational Ministry Center, baptizes the son of Chief Operation's Specialist Michael Melnyk inside the bell of his ship, the Arleigh Burke Class (Flight I) Guided Missile Destroyer USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53), at Naval Station San Diego, Calif., on Sept. 1, 2006. His son will be the third baby whose name is etched inside the ship's bell to record the momentous occasion. The practice of baptizing infants in the bell of their father's ship dates back to the 17th century British Royal Navy and using the ship's bell as a bowl to hold christening water is said to bring the ship good luck while underway.
