Summary edit

Description 330-PS-2419 (USN 708459): USS Ernest G. Small (DD 838). Efficiency in damage control is credited with saving the destroyer when she struck a mine off the coast of Korea on October 7, 1951. The bow of the destroyer was loosened by the blast and started to shake herself to pieces, endangering the rest of the ship. The watertight bulkhead just astern of the break was checked for possible leaks. The watertight bulkhead held out the seas while the destroyer steamed to Japan for temporary repairs. Image was done by an amateur photographer who was a member of the destroyer’s crew and shows the blow floating away from the destroyer and starting to sink. Photograph released December 18, 1951.
