| Description | 330-PS-47 (USN 707452): Navy’s New Flight Simulator. A calculating machine designed to “flight test” a new airplane before it is constructed has been built for the U.S. Navy by engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. With the machine, test engineers are able to set up an invisible, electrical “model” of any aircraft or guided missile in an advanced stage of design, and then apply an autopilot to “fly” the non-existent, theoretical craft. Defects in the plane or missile design can thus be disclosed and corrected without the cost of actual construction and flight testing, January 20, 1950. (8/18/2015). |
