Description 330-PS-6135 (USN 708975): MSTS LST 287 saves Danish ship Else Basse, August 25, 1953. The abandoned Danish freighter Else Basse gutted with fire as USNS LST 287, attached to the Atlantic area, Military Sea Transportation Service, comes alongside to begin fire-fighting operations which six hours later meant saving a two-million dollar cargo of cryolite. The twenty-four man crew and one woman passenger had abandoned the ship six hours before the arrival of the LST and had been rescued by the English steamship, Cornerbrook. (4/21/2015).
