Summary edit

Description 330-PS-6215 (USN 709019): Any tour of San Juan, Puerto Rico, would be incomplete without a visit to the historic El Morro fortress, which stands guard over the entrance to San Juan Bay, as it did when this harbor was a haven for the Spanish galleons sailing between Panama and Seville. The sailors view the entrance to San Juan Harbor from the main ramparts of El Morro. The fort was actually invaded only once. In 1598, the Earl of Cumberland landed a large force of men below San Jan and after a costly battle took both the city and the fort. From these walls in 1593, the Spaniards defeated Sir Francis Drake and his force of 27 ships and 2,500 men. Left to right: HM2 Eileen Paluzzi; HM2 Joseph D. LaFreniere; HM3 Marie A. Myers; and YN3 Harold E. Baker. Photograph released October 26, 1953. Master Caption: Navy Accepts Women Volunteers for Duty on the High Seas. For the first time in history, the U.S. Navy has accepted volunteers for duty on the high seas from women in the enlisted WAVES. Those eligible were WAVES of the Hospital Corps to fill sixty-three billets on ships of the Military Sea Transportation Service. (4/21/2015).
