Myers readies surgical equipment on board USNS George M. Goethals (T-AP-182). Photograph released October 26, 1953. Master Caption: Navy Accepts Women Volunteers for Duty on the High Seas. For the first time in history, the U.S. Navy has accepted volunteers for duty on the high seas from women in the enlisted WAVES. Those eligible were WAVES of the Hospital Corps to fill sixty-three billets on ships of the Military Sea Transportation Service. (4/21/2015).
