| Description | 330-PS-979 (USN 709059a): Transfer of U.S. Cruisers to Chile under MDAP. Ceremonies marking the completion of negotiations between the United States Navy and the Navy of Chile for the transfer of light cruisers, in connection with Hemisphere Defense Plans, took place today in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy John T. Kohehler, (right). Chilean ambassador Felix Nieto Del Rio (center), representing this government and Vice Admiral I. Holger (left) representing the Chilean Navy, signed a memorandum of understanding for the purchase of the light cruisers of USS Brooklyn (CL 40) and USS Nashville (CL 43). The cruisers were first commissioned in September 1937 and June 1938, respectively, displaced 9,700 tons and were 608 feet in length. Brooklyn was renamed O’Higgins and served for another 40 years until scrapped in 1992. Nashville served as Captain Prat until 1982 when she continued to serve for three more years as Chacabuco.
