Description
English: Collision and fire damage mares the side of the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain (CVS-39) as she lies at anchor in the Chesapeake Bay, 38 miles (65 km) south of Annapolis, Maryland (USA). The carrier and the Norwegian motor vessel Skauvaag collided in dense fog early on 3 June 1964. Both ships were damaged but no one on either ship was injured. Fires broke out in two of the carrier’s hangar deck bays, but were extinguished in 45 minutes. None of the planes onboard the carrier was damaged. Aircraft on deck are (l-r):
  • a Grumman S-2F Tracker of Anti-Submarine Squadron 22 (VS-22) "Checkmates";
  • a Douglas EA-1E Skyraider (BuNo 139562) of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 33 (VAW-33) Det.39 "Night Hawks". 139562 was written off after a hard landing on the carrier on 19 September 1964;
  • a Grumman C-1A Trader (BuNo 136756);
  • a UA-1E (BuNo 135217 ?) of VAW-33 Det.39.
