Summary edit

Description 330-PSA-142-62 (USN 711079): The 19,000 pound test vehicle with 16 tires on each track was put through mud tests by the Army at Camp Hale, Colorado. The vehicle operated without difficulties in snow averaging 40 inches in depth, traversing mounds of approximately 12 feet in height and 60 percent slope. Master Caption: This multi-wheeled, rubber-tired behemoth is the test platform for a new concept in off-the-road transport known as the “Airoll.” Developed for the U.S. Navy under a contract with the Office of Naval Research, the Airoll is the first successful mating of the track and wheel. It was originally conceived by the Ingersoll, Kalamazoo Division of the Borg-Warner Corporation. The free-rolling tires mounted on an endless chain can take the vehicle easily over ordinary impassable terrain, such as deep mud, heavy snow, and watery swamplands. The Marine Corps has ordered eight one-half ton amphibious versions to be used as personnel/weapons carriers. Photograph released June 18, 1962. (10/6/2015).
