| Description | 330-PSA-200-60 (USN 1050053): Santa Claus “The Mayor of the North Pole” extends a hearty welcome to his frozen domain to Seadragon frogman Lieutenant G.M. Brewer, USN. Despite the helping hand and warm greeting, Lieutenant Brewer seems a little chilled, although, it may be that he is simply awed by the surprise greeting from the North Pole executive, September 15, 1960. Master Caption: USS Seadragon’s Polar Voyage. USS Seadragon (SSN 584) arrived at Honolulu, Hawaii, on September 14, 1960, after completing her voyage from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to the North Pole, via the Parry Channel “Northwest Passage”. While in the Arctic basin, Seadragon made hydrographic, oceangraphic, and other scientific observations. The submarine surfaced several times in Baffin Bay, the Parry Channel, Arctic Ocean and stopped at the North Pole on August 25, long enough for her crew to play the world’s first polar ball game. Frogmen swam under the ice photographing its underside. The water temperature was 28.50 F at the pole.(9/9/2015). |
