Description 330-PSA-22-62 (USN 711014-A): Secretary of the Navy Fred Korth, (extreme left), congratulates the recipients of the first of the Secretary of the Navy Commendation of Achievement awards. The awards were presented January 17 in Secretary Korth’s Pentagon Office to (left to right): Commander Eugene Cralla, SC, USN; Major William E. Cross, Jr., USMC; and Senior Chief Yeoman Philip J. Caffrey, Jr., USN. All three are stationed in the Washington area and live in Springfield, Virgina. Forty-one other initial awards are being made to persons throughout the Navy establishment. The award was established by former Secretary of the Navy John B. Connally last May to provide recognition for junior officers and enlisted men whose professional achievements are exceptional. The title was shortened to Navy Achievement Medal in 1967. Photograph released January 22, 1962. (9/29/2015).
