Summary edit

Description 330-PSA-232-62 (USN 711119): Track taken by the nuclear-powered submarines USS Skate (SSN 578) and USS Seadragon (SSN 584) in the historic rendezvous under the Polar Ice Pack. Photograph released August 22, 1962. Master caption: The submarines surface together at the North Pole, carried out anti-submarine warfare exercises, collected scientific information, and established a new year-round submarine channel by exploring a passage through the Kennedy and Robeson Channels (between Greenland and Ellesmere Island). The two submarines proceeded to the historic meeting, operation independently, carrying out tests of electronic equipment and gathering scientific information. All tests of sonar capabilities, ASW capabilities, and underwater communications, proved highly successful. USS Skate departed on July 2, and USS Seadragon departed on July 12. (10/6/2015).
