Description 330-PSA-4-62 (USN 711002): The U.S. Navy’s Sikorsky HSS-2 helicopter passes a timing station (top photograph) as it flew 199.01 MPH to claim a new three kilometer world helicopter speed record December 30 at Windsor Locks, Connecticut. The twin-engine helicopter was flown by two engineering test pilots from the Naval Air Test Center at Patuxent River, Maryland. Commander Patrick L. Sullivan, USN,(right in lower photograph) was the pilot and Captain David A. Spurlock, USMC, was co-pilot. The old three kilometer record set by the HSS-2 2was 192.9 MPH. Photograph released January 4, 1962. (9/29/2015).
