| Description | 330-PSA-44-64-1: One and half million ton iceberg, nicknamed “Moby Dick” recently drifted down McMurdo Sound’s man-made shipping channel in the Antarctic and had to be forcibly ejected by the U.S. Navy icebreaker, USS Atka (AGB-3). “Moby Dick,” estimated to be 500 feet long, 200 feet wide and 100 feet high, had been under surveillance by aircraft and ships of Operation Deepfreeze as it shifted about for days at the front door of McMurdo Sound. Finally, it floated into the narrow channel, and Atka outweighed the iceberg 250 to 1, was called upon to push it out. During the early stages of the tussel, Moby Dick seemed to be gaining headway in its drive toward McMurdo Station. Atka had to maneuver carefully to prevent ice cave-in and possible bow damage. In addition, the icebreaker’s bow tended to slide off the slick, weathered sides of the iceberg. After a two-hour duel, however, the 10,000 horsepower Atka got the upper hand and pushed Moby Dick back to sea. Photographed by Photographer’s Mate Second Class P.A. Kopp, USN.
