Summary edit

Description

Steam Locomotive 3801 - west of Springwood - NSW Blue Mountains.

This was the first of the 4-6-2 'Pacific' class, also called the '38 class', locomotives built in 1943 for main line express operations. There were 30 '38 class' locomotives built but only the first 5 built had the streamlined body/nose, the rest of the 38 class fleet (25) were flat nosed with a round boiler body. This engine became noted for hauling the Sydney-Newcastle Flyer from the 1940's to the 1960's. The original livery on this locomotivewas grey and later painted green with yellow striping; which is the more familiar colour of this engine. 3801 was on lease to a group called 3801 limited, <a href="http://www.3801limited.com.au" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.3801limited.com.au</a>, which ran special steam days with this locomotive. Unfortunately the lease expired and 3801 has been returned to the NSW Transport Museum at Thirlmere: <a href="http://www.nswrtm.com.au" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.nswrtm.com.au</a>.

3801 is currently undergoing a full mechanical overhaul. See <a href="http://www.3801.com.au" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.3801.com.au</a> for details.

In my younger days I was a fireman on this locomotive; although I never fired it on a run over the Blue Mountains.

The Public Domain Mark (PDM) is not a copyright license, but a symbol used to indicate that a work is in the public domain. When it is applied by the author or the copyright holder, community consensus has decided such works as being public domain in the US and countries where it is legally possible to release own work to the public domain. In the countries where this is not possible, the copyright status of the work remains undetermined.
If a file is tagged with Public Domain Mark by someone other than the author or the copyright holder, a more specific copyright tag such as one found at Commons:Copyright tags/General public domain must be applied. If this is your own work, please use {{Cc-zero}} instead.
