Summary edit

Description
English: Great Western Railway 'Star' 4-6-0 No.4003 'Lode Star' still in the livery it was repainted-in in 1948 when it was preserved by BR (WR); that livery was 1923 GWR lined Brunswick Green (officially Middle Chrome Green) with the 1928 simplified coat of arms. Churchward designed many outstanding classes but the Star Class of 1906 was arguably his masterpiece of masterpieces, combining French, American, Belgian and British influences. The Stars were regarded by GWR drivers as the most free running of all GWR designs - even moreso than the Castles. The first star was built in 1906 and the last of 73 in 1923. The final Star was not withdrawn until 1957 - 51 years after the first appeared, which is a worthy testament to the capability of the design. The photograph is of a very rare foray into the open air for 'Lode Star' in transit from the NRM York to the 'Steam' museum Swindon. A 3,500 gll Churchward tender is attached. Pictured at Tyseley Locomotive Works, 24 October 2010.
