  • Shield: Azure, upon a base Gules a wall turreted with three towers Argent masoned and detailed Sable, windowed of the second; on a chief wavy of the third, a pale of the second charged with two axes in saltire, blades upward and outward Argent (Silver Gray).
  • Crest: That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Illinois Army National Guard: From a wreath Argent and Azure, upon a grassy field the blockhouse of old Fort Dearborn Proper.

Symbolism

  • Shield: Red is the color traditionally associated with Engineer units. The wall, with the three towers, signifies the Battalion's branch affiliation, symbolizing the first major construction undertaken by the Corps of Engineers, building a system of castle-like fortifications for the protection of harbors along the Atlantic coast. The crossed axes represent the Pioneer Brigade formed in 1862 as the first Engineer element in the Army.
