Description7th St, NY Ave, Mt. Vernon Place NW (1604202278).jpg |
Did You Know? The difference in the trim on these two windows on the same building.... reveal subtle historic changes in the city....the window with the "fuller framing" on the left faces 7th St. NW, while the window with only the "straight frame on top" on the right faces NY Ave NW. There was a time in the history of Washington, leading up to, thru, and shortly after the Civil War in which 7th St. was considered one of the most important streets in the city, for its direct access to the waterfront from the farms in Maryland to the north. Today NY Ave NW has become the major street for it's access to the suburbs as well as being the major NE artery into and out of the city. When this building was built (circa 1880) the "ornamention" faced 7th St NW, or the most prominent street. The real architectural beauty of this building is lost today as drivers speed past the NY Ave side of this building. |
