Description 80-G-208921: German submarine under attack by USS Card (CVE-11) north of the Azores after pilot Lieutenant Junior Grade R.L. Sterns found four U-boats replenishing north of the Azores on October 4, 1943. U-460 (Type XIV) and U-422 (Type-VIIC) were sunk by Card aircraft. U-264 and U-455 (both Type VIIC) escaped. Sterns was aided by F4F pilots Lieutenant Junior Grade Puckett and Heim and TBF pilot Lieutenant Junior Grade Weigle. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
