Description 80-G-304845: Battle for Iwo Jima, February-March 1945. A wave of Fourth Division Marines beginning an attack from the beach at Iwo Jima. A die-hard Japanese soldier gets a blast of liquid flame. Fifth Marine Division rifleman surround the dug-out ready to pour covering fire into the opening. The flame thrower, supported by covering rifle fire, has been a basic weapon in the cave to cave-battle on the volcanic rock. Photograph released February 19, 1945. U.S. Navy Photograph now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/01/19).
