Description 80-G-304850: Battle for Iwo Jima, February-March 1945. Stalled and wrecked vehicles of Marines bagged down in soft Volcanic ash on beach of Iwo Jima were targets for Japanese mortermen who fired down from mountain overlooking beach D-Day. Amtracs and medium tanks of Blue Beach #1. Some of the 800 ships that took part in the action are in the background. Photographed February 19, 1945. U.S. Navy Photograph now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/01/19).
