| Description | 80-G-30553: Pearl Harbor Raid, December 1941. Photograph of the western side of Ford Island and ships in moorings offshore, taken from a Japanese Navy plane during the attack. Ships are (from left to right): USS Detroit (CL-8); USS Raleigh (CL-7), listing to port after being hit by one torpedo; USS Utah (AG-16), capsized after being hit by two torpedoes; and USS Tangier (AV-8), Japanese writing in the lower left states that the photograph's reproduction was authorized by the Navy Ministry. Also at NHHC as NH 50933. Translated Japanese caption reads, “The force of enemy ships on the Northwest side of Ford Island destroyed by our violent attack. The enemy vessels moored on the northwest side of Ford Island opposite the battleships were also violently attacked and put out of action by our assault force. From the left of the photographs two heavy cruisers are both listing badly. The white object seen next to them is the bottom of a completely capsized ship. On the right side of the wreckage of the training ship Utah is a specially-built seaplane tender. The pair of square objects alongside this vessel are mooring posts. (9/22/2015). |
