Description 80-G-30624: Battle of Santa Cruz Islands, October 26, 1942. Lieutenant Commander Hunter Wood Jr., Commanding Officer of USS Smith (DD 378) recounts to correspondents his experience when a Japanese torpedo plane crashed on the forecastle at the height of battle. She lost 60 crewmen in the attack. Repaired, Smith returned to battle and was scraped in 1947. (9/22/2015).
