Description 80-G-67241: Axis Prisoners of Wars. Prisoners shown at Newport News, Virginia, May 30, 1943 after disembarking from USS West Point (AP 23). The prisoners were removed from the transport, searched by M.P.s at foot of gangway and put aboard a train for a prison camp. The train was backed onto the pier. There were 2,828 enlisted Italians, 115 Italian officers and a German Oberleutenant (highest Lieutenant rank of the German forces) from North Africa. Photograph released May 30, 1945. U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/03/01).
