Original Image Name: Piciwiki_israel_88255_DSC01253.JPG Notes: הבריטים ,בצפת, לא התערבו בנעשה בתוך שני הרבעים – היהודי והערבי, מלבד יצירת חיץ בין הצדדים ב-1936 על ידי הריסת שורת בתים שהיו בגבול בין הרובע היהודי לערבי ובמקומם, בניית שורת מדרגות רחבות וארוכות שהגיעו עד למבנה המשטרה. כיום נקראות מדרגות אלו 'מדרגות עולי הגרדום'. בתקופות מתוחות, היו מכריזים הבריטים על מדרגות אלו כשטח צבאי סגור וצלף שהיה עומד בראש בניין המשטרה היה נעזר בפרוז'קטור ומנטרל כל חיכוך בין הצדדים. לימים, עם תחילתו של הקרב על צפת ב-1948, הפנו אותו הכוחות הערביים לעבר עמדות ההגנה.
