Summary edit

Description
English: 9 cylinder radial engine. When I first saw this in 1959 (aged 14) I scribbled on the corner of my map that this was a Mercury 15 - and I have vague memories of it carrying an engine number plate at that time. I had wondered if this wreckage was related to the Avro Anson which crashed on a training flight on 21st August 1942 whose memorial is at NN9899 - see picture 379982. However, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avro_Anson#Specifications_.28Mk_I.29 the Anson was powered by 2 Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah IX radial engines, 350 hp (260 kW) each. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Mercury indicates that the Mercury was associated with the Gloster Gauntlet and its successor, the Gloster Gladiator. It was also used in a twin-engine light bomber, the Bristol Blenheim.
