English: A U.S. Navy Douglas A-4C Skykawk (BuNo 147828) of Attack Squadron 36 (VA-36) "Roadrunners" hangs off the bow of the aircraft carrier USS America (CVA-66), 7 December 1966, en route to Caribbean Sea. At 15h21, when proceeding to a spot position on the bow after a recovery an A-4C aircraft, 147828, piloted by LT (j.g.) K.W. Leuffen, went out of control when the brakes failed. The plane rolled off the bow, and became entangled in the safety nets in a vertical position perpendicular to the water. The aircraft was recovered by the ship's flight deck crash and salvage crew. The aircraft sustained limited damage, the pilot was uninjured. Note the expression on the pilot. A Will Rogers quote seems appropriate: "Everything is funny as long as it is happening to somebody else". |
