| Description |
English: The Jeffrey E. Gundlach Building, the newest addition to the complex of buildings that makes up the newly renamed AKG Art Museum, as seen under construction in July 2021 from atop the Elmwood Avenue overpass bridge above the Scajaquada Expressway. This long-planned expansion was funded in part by a $42.5 million donation from the building's namesake, a financier, investor, and noted art collector native to suburban Amherst. The annex was designed by architect Shohei Shigematsu and will include 30,000 square feet of exhibition space - nearly triple its previous capacity - as well as a wraparound promenade with views over the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed Delaware Park. Groundbreaking took place in November 2019, and it's planned to be completed and the museum reopened to the public by 2022. |
