Oppenheimer (1996), Women Artists in Paris : 1791-1814, New York, New York University, Institute of Fine Arts, p. 275 and note 511 : "The museum label ascribes the painting to an improbable "UMILLEU A.T.?," based on an inscription on the frame. The author of the inscription apparently misread the signature on the canvas. Although the background of the painting has darkened, the words "A.(T?) Varillat/An 6," are still visible, and identify the portrait as by Adele Varillat, nee Tornezy."
