Description

Apollo 14 Hasselblad image from film magazine 68/MM - EVA-2. Sample 14051 is in front of the gnomon. Split Rock is behind it.
Part of this photograph is Figure 3-32 of the Apollo 14 Preliminary Science Report (SP-272), which has the following caption:

Split Rock on Cone Crater ejecta blanket near station C'.

The text of the Report says:

Split Rock. At station C', a large boulder (fig. 3-32) has broken into two large pieces. This well-rounded boulder, along with others in the strewn field, was probably ejected from Cone Crater. The edges of the fracture that separates the boulder pieces are sharp. The rounding of the boulder is similar to that of most of the other boulders on the Cone Crater ejecta blanket. This rounding probably occurred after the boulder was ejected from the crater. The sharpness of the fracture, however, suggests that the fracture is relatively recent and occurred long after the boulder assumed the present rounded form. This type of fracture is probably caused by meteorite impact and should contribute significantly to the erosion of rocks by exposing larger surface areas to micrometeorite bombardment.
