Summary edit

Description

Developed by the National Bureau of Standards, the Bat was America’s first operational fully automated guided missile. It was air-launched from between 15,000 & 25,000ft and was mainly carried by Consolidated PB4Y Privateers, although it could also be launched from modified F4U Corsair, SB2C Helldiver and TBF Avenger aircraft. Designed for use against shipping or off-shore targets, it could carry a 1,000lb warhead a range of 15-20 miles and was guided by a radar-homing system. 2,580 were built and some saw combat during WW2, destroying several Japanese ships off Borneo in April 1945 and later being modified to attack bridges in Burma. The type was retired from service when the war ended. This example was transferred to the Smithsonian Institute from the US Navy in 1950 and is now part of the National Air and Space Museum. It is seen on display in the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
