Description
English: The AWM caption reads: "The burning village of Hamel (centre) and the smoke enveloped Hamel Wood, during their attack and capture by the Australian troops, on 4 July 1918. The line of trees running from left to right borders the Somme Canal. Vaire Wood and Hamel Wood with the village itself were the chief centres of resistance which were overcome by the 4th and 11th Brigades respectively, the 6th Brigade attacking on the right."
